Abstract
Cultural safety a concept that identifies the role of culture in health care practice, recognizes the potential for disparities among different groups, acknowledges the need for continuous self-reflection and self-assessment, and seeks to promote the principles of participation, protection, and partnership. Culture has been identified as a significant cause of health disparities and, as a result, learning about it has become a pillar of nursing education and continuing education for practicing nursing professionals. A high impact E-learning module on the topic of cultural safety was developed and then trialed by third year undergraduate BScN students at a midsize university in Southwestern Ontario. Digital storytelling, a novel form of creative media used as an expressive medium to allow participants to share personal stories or experiences, was used in the module. Attached to the module, was a short quiz to test for absorption of the information presented. Informal feedback from students revealed a consensus that the two digital stories featured were the most impactful part of this learning experience. Challenges and facilitators to developing, implementing, and launching the module will be discussed. Added to this presentation, in September 2019, student volunteers will re-do the quiz to assess for ongoing retention of the material, follow-up results on retainability will also be presented.
